Mission Statement
The eleven mile stretch of US 129 affectionately known as The Tail of the Dragon is a challenging and scenic journey that continues to draw nature lovers, historians, photographers, bikers and automobile enthusiasts in groups large and small from near and abroad year after year.
For us Raptors, what began as a small but promising event organized by a mere few members of MSV (Mid-South Velosters) not even two years ago, has quickly evolved into an engaging weekend of thrills and excitement for numerous Velosters hailing from nearly ten states, and still growing! Needless to say, as the attendance has expanded, so has the necessity for a heightened order of planning, organization and staffing, both evident as well as behind the scenes. Growing such an event is no small feat.
As you can imagine, another aspect of such a production that continues to grow is the expense. It is simply no longer an event that can be promoted from the pockets of a few like-minded club members. Now, while we seek and welcome sponsors and volunteers, we can no longer rely upon those alone. This year a modest registration fee has been implemented and we are certain you’ll be surprised at the small amount. Nonetheless, good prudence would dictate that you be informed and aware of exactly how it is spent. Foremost, this is not payment, profit or income for any of the organizers, planners or staffers of RVD. Among other things, it helps with the cost of printing, armbands and all the little things that really begin to add up with respect to a rapidly growing group of attendees such as this. Additionally, much of, if any, remaining funds will be DONATED to the Blount County Rescue Squad, whom tirelessly and voluntarily patrol and offer often life-saving aid and services on ‘The Dragon. Any last remaining funds, if any, will be used to initiate the next RVD. Simply put, all proceeds go to the event and the men and women in uniform that so graciously donate their most irreplaceable asset; their time.
Thereby, we stand behind these virtues now and ever more in faith that out of all the miles you log annually, RVD will continue to be the eleven miles that you, your families and your friends will look forward to the most, this and every year.
